A Poem to Celebrate His First Birthday

A Poem to Celebrate His First Birthday

Becoming a Mother has been the best thing I have ever done. My baby boy brings so much joy to my life. In celebration of his first birthday on 28th January 2021, I wrote this poem.

As I wrote, my eyes welled, thinking of all the moments we've had together this year and all the many more we'll have in the years to come.

I'm not one to hold on to things, because in life, everything is impermeable.

Which basically means, everything ends. Nothing is forever.

And so, knowing that this time with him being so little will end as he grows and grows, I'm soaking in as much of it now as I can.

In celebration of all Mothers who have had their bub in 2020, this is for you:

This year has flown, and my how you’ve grown.

Your smile lights my heart,

As it did, right from the start.

Your giggles fill the room with so my joy,

As you play so peacefully with just the simplest toy.

We've had a lot of time together, just you me and your Dad,

2020 has been tough for many, but not us, we couldn't be more glad.

This slow down year has come in perfect timing,

Because you my dear boy, your company is so calming.

I love you more than you could ever know,

And I love myself more for helping you grow.

My role as your Mother has completed a gap I didn’t know I had,

As it fills in with love and laughter from you and your Dad.

As I sit here and write this, it's one year to the date.

That my waters broke, labour started and I was in such a happy state.

Because I knew you were coming, I knew you'd be safe,

In my arms as we welcomed you, all together in one place.

This year has flown, and my how we've grown.

It’s not just you my dear boy, it's all of us that you've shown.

That to grow is to become bigger some would say,

But to grow is to also learn, accept and enjoy each and every day.

Keep Photos and Videos for Memories

As I write this post, his birthday is coming to an end and the celebrations are slowing. We just recorded a short video to tell him what we did today, how special this first year has been and just how proud we are of our little boy.

It's a keep sake, which is something I love to do. Photos and videos are something to treasure, to help bring the memories to light.

So if this is your reminder to write in a journal, or take that photo. Do it.

In years to come you'll be grateful that you did.

Happy birthday to you too Mama, whenever that little one of yours turns a year older, remember that so too do you.
